چکیده

One of the major concerns in optical networks is the bandwidth underutilization problem. In fact, as WDM technology keeps maturing, there is a bandwidth gap between the transmission speed of a wavelength channel (over a Gb/s) and the capacity requirement of customers’ connections. In this regard, building cost-efficient optical networks requires an efficient traffic grooming solution at the high speed optical access nodes. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a new concept of traffic aggregation in wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. Our objective is to reduce the network cost while preserving the benefits of all-optical wavelength-routed networks. In order to assess the efficiency of our proposal, all underlying network costs are compared. These costs include that of the transceivers required at node level as well as the number of wavelengths. Our results show that the proposed aggregation technique can significantly improve the network throughput while reducing its cost. c © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Routing and dimensioning of optical networks under traffic growth models: an asymptotic analysis

Abstraceln this paper we consider the problem of routing and problem is solved for time-varying traffic amvals which is more dimensioning in a large optical network assuming the traffic is growing over time. In optical networks, traffic is carried through lightpaths and we model the traffie as follows: Lightpaths arrive randomly to a time-varying Poisson process and hold for a random time with ...

A Novel Protection Guaranteed, Quality of Transmission Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment Algorithm for All-optical Networks

Transparent All Optical Networks carry huge traffic and any link failure can cause the loss of gigabits of data; hence protection and its guarantee becomes necessary at the time of failure. Many protection schemes were presented in the literature, but none of them speaks about protection guarantee. Also, in all optical networks, due to absence of  regeneration capabilities, the physical layer i...

Getting routers out of the core: Building an all-optical network with "multipaths"

We propose an all-optical networking solution for an Internet core network based on the notion of multipointto-multipoint lightpaths that, for short, we call multipaths. The multipath MAC protocol concentrates the traffic of a cluster of source nodes on a wavelength channel and multicasts this traffic to a cluster of destination nodes. The proposed network can be built using existing components...

Low-cost, delay-bounded point-to-multipoint communication to support multicasting over WDM networks

The con uence of technical advances and multimedia service needs is intensifying the need for high throughput and low latency. Future communication networks will face an increase in tra c driven by multimedia requirements with stringent delay and jitter requirements. Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical networks have the potential for meeting these goals by o ering unprecedented high ...

Approximation Algorithms for Survivable Optical Networks

We are motivated by the developments in all-optical networks { a new technology that supports high bandwidth demands. These networks provide a set of lightpaths which can be seen as high-bandwidth pipes on which communication is performed. Since the capacity enabled by this technology substantially exceeds the one provided by conventional networks, its ability to recover from failures within th...
